Award categories and entry criteria

The Oxford Online Library Champion Awards, launched by Oxford University Press (OUP) and the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA), celebrate and reward the achievements of public library authorities in promoting access to the five prestigious Oxford Online resources available to public libraries across England following the landmark national licence agreement between OUP and the MLA in March 2006.

The agreement underlined OUP's core mission to promote widespread access to top quality information and scholarship, and usage of Oxford Online resources by public library members across England has since increased dramatically.

Librarians have played an invaluable role in this success story, and OUP and the MLA launched these new awards to celebrate their efforts in promoting Oxford Online resources to the public, to showcase individual achievement, and to inspire best practice.

There were four award categories, and libraries were able to enter more than one category. The first category is for an individual rather than a team of library staff:

Oxford Online Library Champion of the Year
Best Overall Strategy to Promote Awareness of Oxford Online Resources
Best Website Promotion of Oxford Online Resources
Most Effective Staff Training on Oxford Online Resources

The closing date for entries was 5.30pm on Tuesday 30 October 2007.

The awards were judged by a panel in November and were presented to the winners on Thursday 06 December at Online Information 2007.

What the award winners received:
  • The winner of the Oxford Online Library Champion of the Year Award will receive a luxury two-night stay for two in Oxford, lunch at the Printer's House of OUP and an individual tour of the OUP Museum, a tour of the Bodleian Library, and a personal copy of the new edition of the leatherbound Shorter Oxford English Dictionary (worth £250).

  • Winners of the other three award categories will be able to choose five titles (worth up to £5000) from the Oxford Digital Reference Shelf for their library authority - titles available include the 5-volume Encyclopedia of British Literature and the 4-volume Encyclopedia of Children's Literature. A copy of the new edition of the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary will also be given to a nominated individual (worth £125).

  • Excellent publicity for the library service and recognition for outstanding staff contributions.
